Llano Seco Wildlife Refuge

The Llano Seco Wildlife Refuge is an area near Chico, California (map) that winter fowl use as a migratory checkpoint during their annual trek through California.  According to the locals I spoke with as many as 100,000 waterfowl can be in this area within the November and February months!  This area is a prime example of the benefits of roadtripping without relying on a GPS; I would have never run across the area if I hadn’t mistakenly driven by it!

This particular image was shot just before sunrise around 5:30AM on January 1st, 2012.  The colors of the almost sun were making the clouds explode with character — you can hardly ask for a better scene to capture!
